Welcome to the Sterling Employment Reference Verification FAQ.
- Q : How do I log in ?
A : Simply enter in the e-mail address that the invitation e-mail was sent to. If you have multiple e-mail addresses that all route to one inbox, you will need to use the exact address that was provided to us by the candidate.
- Q : Why do I have to log in with an e-mail address ?
A : This brings you into our secure server, where the transfer of information can occur safely - Sterling has never had a breach of data security in over 30 years of operation.
- Q : Why do I have to provide my name and job title ?
A : This is for transparency purposes. Sterling is committed to the accuracy of our reports, and part of that is being able to say who responded to our verification request.
- Q : Why do I have to indicate that I am authorized to perform the verification? If I’m not, why am I in this portal ?
A : We at Sterling recognize that an applicant’s employment history is a sensitive piece of information that should be treated with care and respect. Likewise, we understand that employers must comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and that should be taken seriously. As for who receives the e-mail, we have received this address directly from the candidate, and it has been validated by our partner, Neustar. If the candidate has given your address in error, we do provide a section where you can indicate who is authorized to release this information.
- Q : What if I don’t have a record for the candidate ?
A : Select “No” for “Are you authorized to verify the reference?”. Then, you can indicate that there are no records in the Comments text box at the bottom of the questionnaire. Once all of the selected requests have been handled, you will come back to the dashboard screen. Click Submit one more time, and the results will be sent to Sterling.
- Q : What if I have to stop in the middle of the questionnaire and come back to it later ?
A : Scroll to the bottom of the questionnaire – there will be a “Save” button. Click on that button, and you will receive a confirmation screen stating that your progress has been saved. To return to the questionnaire, go back to the invitation e-mail that you were sent. Click on Confirm, then log back in with your e-mail address. All of the answers that you had entered previous to saving will re-populate.
